SPECIALIZED INDUSTRY APPLICATION...

Using 80/20 Aluminum Extrusions to maneuver products

view CAD drawing

80/20 ApplicationProblem: Customer needed to transport product from one end of the workbench to the other.

Solution: Instead of using a flat, hard surface, we decided to mount rollers within the 80/20 T-Slotted Aluminum Extrusion, allowing for easy transport along the ten foot workstation. Overhead, the top extrusion acts as an air manifold, giving the operator access in five locations to plug in whatever pneumatic devices are going to be utilized. Three 80/20 toolhangers that move freely along the entire length to store tools, hoses, etc., are also located overhead. The workstation can also be used for storage. On the bottom, it has four sliding lockable panels for easy access.

Production demands and ergonomics can be easily met using a workstation constructed of 80/20. If you have any questions concerning this project or 80/20 Extrusions, please contact Art Harris by phone at (908) 464-4800 x210, or by e-mail at aharris@knottsco.com.

TECHNICAL TIP...

What is a Fieldbus?

It is a technology that is beginning to appear more frequently in Factory Automation Systems. Simply put, Fieldbus is the generic term for an industrial serial communication system. Input and output data is transferred by a single cable linked to modules. DeviceNet, Profibus, and Pneubus are examples of Fieldbus Protocols. In pneumatic systems, Fieldbus-linked drivers operate valves, or other remote devices, while feedback from sensors is provided by input modules.

There is an advantage for OEMs using Fieldbus. It simplifies wiring between large numbers of components. Let's assume you have 3-4 banks of valves placed at different locations, and several sensors/switches mounted throughout the machine. Using conventional wiring methods, it may take up to a week to wire all the valves and sensors. With Fieldbus, the program- controlled operation is performed through a single cable that interconnects the modules with a PLC. Wiring could be done in a day, installation costs are reduced, and costs are lowered.

If you would like to learn more about this technology and how it relates to pneumatic control, please contact Fred Heimall at fheimall@knottsco.com or by calling (908) 464-4800 x236.
