What
is a Fieldbus?
It
is a technology that is beginning to appear more frequently
in Factory Automation Systems. Simply put, Fieldbus is the
generic term for an industrial serial communication system.
Input and output data is transferred by a single cable linked
to modules. DeviceNet, Profibus, and Pneubus are examples
of Fieldbus Protocols. In pneumatic systems, Fieldbus-linked
drivers operate valves, or other remote devices, while feedback
from sensors is provided by input modules.
There
is an advantage for OEMs using Fieldbus.
It simplifies wiring between large numbers of components.
Let's assume you have 3-4 banks of valves placed at different
locations, and several sensors/switches mounted throughout
the machine. Using conventional wiring methods, it may take
up to a week to wire all the valves and sensors. With Fieldbus,
the program- controlled operation is performed through a single
cable that interconnects the modules with a PLC. Wiring could
be done in a day, installation costs are reduced, and costs
are lowered.
